Many things in June caused me to neglect the blog. First, I went home to see my family. At first it was supposed to be a two-week trip. However, I decided to go through a routine health exam, and things got worse from there. I had to undergo a procedure that starts with B and ends with OPSY. I still don’t have the results. Now they pushed it back to Friday. This medical crap forced me to prolong my trip for two more weeks, which I didn’t mind.
In the meantime, I decided that my blog and other social media accounts could benefit from professional photography. And voilà! I’m a model 😂😂😂. I had two separate photoshoots with different teams of photographers and makeup artists. The first was on a location, the one you can see on the photo above. It was an abandoned chemical factory, a mini-city-sized place with city blocks of buildings deteriorated with time. If someone needs a tip where to cheaply shoot a zombie apocalypse flick, let me know 😉.
The second photoshoot was held in the studio. I wanted another modelling experience with different makeup and themes.

Here we were shooting a ‘flying’ scene. The photoshopped result should look completely magical. I need to wait for about three weeks for that. You’ll see more of the pictures later. There are many different creative characters and looks, all of which I created myself. I also should mention that all the outfits were proudly selected from the thrift store 😂. Minus the shoes of course. I’m a shoe-holic, like Carrie Bradshaw, so I have every crazy shoe under the sun.
Another cool thing that happened to me was that I purchased a vintage Olympia Progress typewriter from 1940s. It’s in a working condition too!
This Olympia joined my 1930s Royal typewriter that I own for about 5 years now. It’s in a spectacular cosmetic condition, but one wheel wore out, and it needs a replacement part. This is a project for my future. I can officially call myself a collector!
All these events forced me to abandon my #HugoChallenge project in June. However, I believe that the first challenge, the Seveneves, broke the camel’s back. Honestly, 800 pages of something about as exciting as dripping honey? The premise is great, but this book put me to sleep more often than many other books in my life. So I have to shamefully confess, I haven’t finished it. I will, just need a break from it. So I’m going to pick up the challenge these days and try to make it by August 20, when the Hugo’s are announced.
That’s about it on my news. I hope it explains why I fell off the map. I had some commitments with some of you, mostly about reading your books, interviews, guest posts and such. I remember all of that. And this week I will get back to all of you.

Hi Simon! I’m sure all will be fine. It was a minor suspicion, not a serious far gone situation, so all may be cleared. With regards to photos, I always thought I am against being photographed. I think I’ve changed my mind 😃

Yeah, the scene was the most challenging to film. It’s not easy to balance on that chair on your stomach, and evidently my back does not bend well 🙂 But it was fun. And thanks for the best wishes. All will be ok, I’m sure.

Hope all’s well for you on matters medical. The photo shoots sound like a lot of fun! It’s funny how writing and typewriters are always entwined. I took my Adler to the Wellington waterfront to get some photos of it posed against suitable backdrops – attracting some very curious attention as a result. (‘I like taking my typewriter for a walk, the poor thing doesn’t get much fresh air you know’.) I ended up talking to a journalist who worked for the same paper I’d written for, and who’d owned the same brand of typewriter…
Typewriters they are like our pets, aren’t they? I am very emotionally attached to mine two babies :). Re folks seeing you with it, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them were thinking it’s a new Mac gadget. Well, maybe not. Apple probably have the patents! 🙂 I used some of the pix on my new website, e.g. http://matthewwright.net/?page_id=118 – these are clips from the main photos which I must publish. It was kind of hilarious. I also own an IBM Selectric II which isn’t in working order – a pulley came off and there was no way I could get it back on again. I really want to locate one of those Smith Corona uprights from the 1940s, but they’re hard to find these days in New Zealand.
I’d like one of those Smith Corona too! I actually have a third one from the 1970s, a Latvian (!!) brand! I’ll look for a picture of it. It works perfectly, just no ribbon. Needs some oiling due to sticky keys.
